small point. starcraft 2 is a game that will have a large multiplayer player base. constant internet connectivity makes sense for sc2.

assassins creed 2 is a single player, story/plot heavy game with no interaction with other players whatsoever.

it is therefore not hypocritical to tolerate enforced connectivity in one and not the other.

  2. I definitely agree that the two games are going to be serving different groups of people. However, most aren’t making the distinction about the type of game…just as many people are saying “No way!” to buying ANY game using the Ubi server system, not just a purely single player title like Assassin’s Creed 2, and then turning around and gushing about Starcraft 2. I’m noticing the same sort of hypocrisy popping up now between Command & Conquer 4 and Starcraft 2, as well.

Sorry, I saw this in another article here, ‘Blizzard announces Battle.Net to be required for Starcraft II, details new additions to system’, and I just have to correct one part of your rant.

Starcraft 2 does NOT require a permanent internet connection:

As such, you might still have a point about people going over the top in comparing Ubisoft’s DRM with raping and Nazis, but they are not being hypocritical, in the slightest, by failing to rail against Blizzard in the same way.

  4. Thank you for the catch, Wolftooth. When I initially wrote this, they hadn’t clarified anything with regards to single player not requiring a permanent connection. I did a little research after reading your comments, and will make an appropriate update to both posts. Thanks again. :)

Very nice article, indeed. I laughed myself out, and I totally agree with it’s content, and the actual reality of both sides…
This whole mess could’ve been avoided if people didn’t invest money on single player games which require a constant internet connection. Instead, they should’ve told to the responsible company that this is not a good measure to defend their rights.
However, after all of this has happened, the game NEEDS to get cracked, so that the companies and the PEOPLE realize that the DRM system only brings problems to everyone. It’s a shame that it has came to this, but it’s the only way out…
Like I said and I keep saying: a single player game doesn’t have to need internet to be played..
whenever I don’t get to be online, I want to play my single player games, just like I play GTA IV, Counter Strike, Assassins creed I, and very soon, Assassins creed II.

  6. If a game being cracked was something that would prove to a company that their DRM system wasn’t worth it, companies wouldn’t be using DRM systems anymore. Period. I think that you hit the nail on the head earlier, though. If everyone refuses to buy games like this, THEN we’ll see a change.
