THQ’s upcoming Metro 2033 to use Steamworks on PC

THQ’s upcoming post-apocalyptic shooter/adventure game/awesomeness simulator (errr…I’m just a little geeked about it) will be using Steamworks when it releases on the PC on March 16th in North America and March 19th elsewhere.

That means that it will make use of Steam Cloud saves and Steam Achievements and the like, but also require the game to run through the Steam client. So regardless of where you buy it, you will need to run it via Steam.

Another automatic no buy… not interested in Steamworks or Steam itself.

Steam is much better than most of the crappy DRM limitations coming out.

  3. Valve is definitely smart enough to add enough value to their system that a lot of gamers (myself included) don’t mind their system. Same deal with Battle.net. Honestly, had Ubisoft followed those models, I don’t think the uproar would have been as loud as it has been (though the European servers bombing out for an entire weekend didn’t help).

I wonder how much they have paid to have steam handle the DRM?

I also wonder if a really great game came out without DRM, who would buy it? It would either be a very poor seller or the PC hit of the decade. Not sure which.

  5. Seeing as Metro 2033 was developed using Unreal Engine 3, and Epic and Valve just announced any title using UE3 will get free access to Steamworks if it’s wanted, I’d guess they paid nothing for it. Valve’s going to make a cut from every sale of the game from its service anyway, so they can afford to give it away.

That really is the proverbial million dollar question. What would happen?
